What is a corticosteroid injection?
Technically, cortisone is a pregnene steroid hormone. A cortisone injection is an anti-inflammatory shot that may help with pain and swelling. It works by decreasing the inflammatory response in the area of the body where it is being injected. Cortisone can be used to treat conditions that affect joints, muscles and tendons.
What conditions can a cortisone injection treat?
- Arthritis
- Carpal tunnel syndrome
- Bursitis
- Tendonitis
- Low back pain
- Trigger finger
- Tennis elbow
- Knee pain
- TMJ
- Rotator cuff and meniscal issues
How long will a cortisone injection last?
The length of pain relief a patient gets after a corticosteroid injection depends on a multitude of factors including the condition being treated, how long it has been present and the location of the injection. On average a patient might expect 3-6 months of anti-inflammatory effects.
Considerations
Cortisone is a short term solution, it may work best when combined with other treatments or exercise prescription to address the underlying causes of inflammation. More frequent injections of cortisone can increase the risk of long-term side effects.
